Shotcrete strain gauge is an electrical device which is buried in the shotcrete body and records the strains induced in the shotcrete body.  The instrument is designed to yield with the shotcrete strains both in compression and extension.  The material of the instrument is chosen so that it gives the instrument maximum sensitivity.

The sensor is equipped with four strain gauges which are connected to each other in such a format to eliminate any temperature effects.  The instrument is made in our machine shop and the electronics department, then tested and calibrated to maximum 3000 micro strain range which is quite high by concrete standards.  Since the instrument is electrical, it can be connected to any data acquisition system and read remotely.  This equipment is completely sealed against water and is a robust tool to be put into wet bodies.
