Post-tensioning is a method of strengthening concrete with strands or bars referred to as tendons. Post tensioning application includes high rise buildings, parking structures, slabs, bridges, sport stadiums, rock and soil anchors, concrete tanks, and heavy lifting.

Using post-tensioning method helps us reduce the amount of concrete and bars used in concrete structures. In buildings it causes to have thinner slabs and reduction in weight and height. This in turn, saves mechanical system. Post-tensioning method allows us to have longer clear spans in structures as well.

In this method a number of strands are inserted into a metal or plastic duct embedded in concrete. The strands are stressed with a large, multi-strand jack or a mono jack and anchored in an anchorage device. The anchorage consists of an iron casting in which the strand is gripped by a conical, two-piece wedge. The duct is then filled with cement grout to provide corrosion protection to the strand and to bond the tendon to the concrete around the duct. There is also another type of strand that does not need any duct. It consists of a seven-wire strand that is coated with grease and encased in PE sheathing.
