More information about Masjed Soleiman Project:

Masjed Soleiman Hydroelectric

Power Plant (extension part)

Client:  Ab-Niroo

Engineer:  Moshanir

Contractor:  Hara Institue

Masjed Soleiman is another very important underground hydroelectric power plant in Iran.  It is built on Karun river and the dam body is a rock fill dam which was finished in year 2000.  The dam has been designed to provide enough water to run the underground power plant with 2000MW capacity.  The power house is built at two stages.  Phase one which was completed almost in 2002, is in operation and the second phase is under construction.  The excavation stages of the second phase (known as extension phase) was started by Hara Institute in 1998 and it is almost ended (in 2003) the concrete work is going to be started in this year.  All of the instrumentation regarding this project at phase two was done by Payab Zamzam Company.  It contained powerhouse cavern, transformer cavern, all of the access tunnels and adits.

The instrumentation job was started in early 1998.  A team of engineers and technicians were located at site and till now all of the job is done by this team in a very precise manner.  The instruments included extensometers, load cells and pressure cells and also convergence meters.  All of the instruments were electric type enabling the long term reading capability during the life time of the project.  Due to the complex structure of the excavation and the need to have a lot of different supporting systems, the load cell variety was high.  Load cells from hydraulic type ranging from 35-100 tones were used there for monobars.  Due to the limitations with space in the concrete beam, electrical strain gauged load cells ranging  from 100-200 tonnes were used for the cable tendons and ground anchors.

The extensometers were equipped with LVDT's to measure the displacements with 0.01 mm accuracy.  These electrical heads were put on the extensometers after a while to avoid any damages to the electrical head due to the blastings.  The team by now have completed 90% of the job and is getting ready to move to the next part of the job which is to put the data acquisition system for long term automatic monitoring of the instruments.

The combination of the appropriate instruments designed and built to suite the best the project by Payab Zamzam team together with the 24 hour on site presentation of the engineers, made this experience a very successful one in which the complete history and behaviour of the rock mass in extension phase is monitored and reported by now.  According to the daily findings of these instruments, the engineer was enabled to put the exact amount of extra support system to stop unexpected movements of the rock mass.  A sample of such a result is shown in figures bellow.

An example of extensometer reading for a 15 meter extensometer with four anchor points at power house cavern is shown bellow.

The following shows an example of forms filled for the load cell reacords.  Almost similar forms exist for other instruments.
