More information about Lavarak HEPP project;

Lavarak Underground Power Plant

Client:  Ab Niroo.

Engineer:  Lar Consulting Engineers

Instruments:  Convergence meter. electrical load cell, electrical pressure cell and shotcrete strain gauge.

Lavarak underground power plant is located east of Tehran in Hezar Darreh Formations.  The formation consists of young conglomerates.  The rock mass is therefore really in the Gray zone between a soil and a rock.  The access tunnel and the main cavern are completed in 2003 and the whole monitoring system consisted of electrical extensometers, pressure cells, shotcrete strain gauges and load cells are installed in this project.  The whole system would be considered to be data logged in future stages for ease of control during the life time of the power plant.

Many warnings came from the monitoring system resulted in the early detecting of the weak areas avoiding any unexpected failures.  A good cooperation between the local resident team of Payab Zamzam company to install and read the instruments together with the contractor and the engineer body made this monitoring program a successful one.  Samples of such results aer depicted in figures bellow.

7 points extensometers are used to monitor the displacement profile of the rock mass.  A sample of such is shown in the following picture.  The shift of all the anchor points from the x-axis represents the shotcrete movement.

Some 4 points extensometers were also used for points a sample of which is depicted in the following graph.

Load cells in this project generally do not pick up much loads which stresses on the importance of quality control while bolting.

Picking up pressure by pressure cells are important for temporary support quality and quantity validation.

Strain guges are put into the shotcrete body to measure the strains created in the shotcrete during rock movement.  A sample of such readings is depicted in the following graph.

A sample of convergence measurement in Lavarak tunnels is presented in the following graph.
